Records among Norwegian ringed birds

Longevity- and distance records

There are big differences in how long birds live. In general, the larger species lives longer than the smaller ones, and the ones that have many chicks lives shorter than those who produce few chicks. Some species groups live longer than others. Seabirds attains a high age, and often reaches an age of 30 years. While passerines, in general have a lifespan of 2-3 years. The oldest bird ever recorded in Norway is an Atlantic Puffin that came close to 41 years.

The ringing centre often receives reports of old birds. Recently, a new world longevity record was set for both Siberian Jay and Ruff!
